Approach

A production-first method: start from the business need, make the constraints explicit, then choose the AI building blocks and the API layer with an observability and deployment strategy defined from the outset.

I start from the business need and the real constraints before picking a single piece of technology. Cost, latency, privacy and operability are decided up front, not after go-live.

  1. Business need analysis

Use case, criticality, expected service level, available data, legal constraints, scope and acceptance criteria.

  2. Model choice: API or local

Trade-offs between cost, latency and privacy. Availability, governance, GPU constraints, fallback strategy and degraded modes.

  3. Embeddings strategy

Granularity, chunking, versioning, evaluation, update handling and source quality.

  4. Vector database

Storage choice, indexes, filtering, tenant isolation, retention, performance and cost.

  5. API layer

FastAPI and REST, authentication, rate limiting, schemas, idempotency, traceability and stable contracts.

  6. Observability

Structured logs, metrics, traces, and quality tracking: prompt version, retrieval relevance, observed drift.

  7. Deployment

CI/CD, environments, secrets management, scaling, observability and operational runbooks.
